A groundbreaking study from Columbia University has revealed a surprising connection between dietary iron and immune function, particularly in the lungs. The study, published in The Journal of Immunology, found that iron-deficient mice had more severe illness and impaired activation of T cells in the lung when infected with influenza. Thomas Connors, assistant professor of pediatrics at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, explains, "Our study sheds new light on one of the reasons why iron deficiency, which disproportionately affects children, is linked to an increased risk of viral infection and more severe illness."

The researchers focused on memory T cells, which help the body respond to previously encountered pathogens. They found that mice with very low iron levels were able to form normal-looking memory T cells in the lung, but these cells had impaired ability to produce interferon gamma and tumor necrosis factor alpha, crucial proteins that help immune cells recognize and combat infections.

This defect persisted even after iron levels were restored, indicating that iron deficiency not only makes it harder to shake off an infection but could also have a lasting impact on the immune system's response to future viral threats.
