My love of India 🇮🇳 started with looking into its electricity market design :) … pre- Electricity Act of 2003 🦑. So I am especially excited to be speaking at this event. 🌞

Honored to have had the opportunity to work with Mark Symes and the #ARIA team on the governance framework for this programme and to serve as the acting chair for the Oversight Committee. #Decarbonization (and emissions reduction more broadly - don't forget the particles! #blackcarbon) is essential for mitigating climate change. But we (some humans more than others) may have backed ourselves into a corner in which it would be helpful to know more about additional options for avoiding catastrophic, irreversible changes in the environment around us. It behooves us to learn more about how "Active Cooling" (a.k.a. #solargeoengineering, #SolarRadiationModification) works (or doesn't work) in practice, what impacts it has, and how it might be governed. It also behooves us to learn very carefully, minimizing not only the direct risks of the research but also the longer term possibility that these approaches would be used too lightly, too hastily, or for particularistic purposes. Check out the governance principles and approach here: https://lnkd.in/gUCMVt9X The last principle is "Learn." So get in touch if you have thoughts on how we can do better to explore, carefully, recognizing the broader implications of knowledge about "actively cooling." And take a look at the program solicitation. Three things to note - 1. #SocialScience, #Humanities, #Law, #Ethics scholars: it's open to your proposals and concepts - both as stand-alone proposals, and as requests for "teaming" - ARIA's way of connecting up applicants to form interesting, creative , interdisciplinary consortia. 2. This solicitation is truly open to proposals from outside the UK. Please apply. Pass it on. Your questions, ideas, priorities are important. #international3. This call is approach-agnostic, to the extent that it can be given the legal framework and restriction to keep any experiments bounded, reversible, small-scale, and safe. But if you have #SolarRadiationModification research ideas that fit within those boundaries - submit a concept.

“One of the most important ideas spotlighted at the conference was sufficiency i.e. avoiding the demand for materials and energy while delivering a decent living standard for all within planetary boundaries.”
